About our products

All our products are manufactured from our home in the sunny villiage of Dunsandel, just south of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand.

We buy the possum skins mostly off full time hunters and collate them into lots of 700-800 then take them into one of our local tanneries to have them tanned  to our unique recipe.  They then come back to us and we then decide on the best use for  them. The best skins are used for bedsrpeads, cushions and fashion items and other grades are best as nipple warmers etc.

The New Zealand Brushtail Possum is notorious for fighting amonst themselves as they are very territorial. This can result in damage to the fur and at certain times of the year hunting is stopped as the damage to the skins can make the skin virtually worthless. The worst time is usually around mating season. Each possum usually mates once a year but because our climate and food supply is so good for them, some possums will mate twice a year.

It is very important to New Zealand to keep the numbers in check as they consume an awfull lot of our native forest and left alone would very quickly decimate our forests. They seem to find a nice tasting tree and won't stop until the tree is stripped.

Latest estimate there were 60 million possums consuming 30,000 tons of vegetation every night.

They have also taken a liking to our National Icon the Kiwi where they have been recorded robbing the nest of eggs and baby Kiwi's.

Our sheepskin products are made from the best sheepskins available here in New Zealand from one of only 2 or 3 sheepskin tanneries left in the southern hemisphere. The pressure on us to import sheepskins from China is ever present because of the price levels. It seems rediculous for the farmers here to send all their sheepskins to China to be tanned and then sent back here as finished product.

My wife Sue and I have a hand in all products made in our small factory and as such can keep an eye on the quality. We have five other staff, all from our small village, whom we value very much.
